Being Sweep
The sweep’s job is to keep the ride rolling, solving problems quickly and effectively and ensuring the group is safe. He should wave to release cornermen as he sees them, and help slow or tired riders. A good sweep knows when to gently push someone who is struggling, but also knows when to sit a worn rider under a tree to let him recover for a few minutes. He’ll have a jumbo pack of jelly beans, and a lot of water. If possible a sweep should have a long range fuel tank so he can top up those running low. It’s also an idea for the sweep to have a mate riding with him, because even sweeps can break down or get hurt.
